Road Trip

At the end of day two of Eddie’s and my road trip to Chicago. ‘Bout 1500miles

We just got to Houston, which is hoppin, by the way. Thank god, too. Everything between here and Los Angeles is rather nondescript, to say the least.

We ended up doing a lot of night driving, which spared us bleak desert landscapes, and also, more importantly, traffic. By doing this, we saw two fantastic sunrises. I got a few good pictures of the first one, and later found that I forgot to install the software on my iBook that allows me to take the photos off my camera. Dammit.

We found a CompUSA and I bought a compact flash card reader, which I figured I needed anyway. I plugged my card into it and the goddam thing proceeded to corrupt every photo file on my flash card. And because of that, no more fabulous December 18th Arizona sunrise for anyone to see. CompUSA will be hearing from me in the morning.

The second sunrise was not as good as the first, but still photoworthy. However, by the time I found a good spot to photograph it from, it had quickly become a very boring sunrise, and not worth the disk space. Aside from being boring, it was also painful, as we are driving directly east, and I spent hours that morning staring directly into the sun.

In the meantime I did find an inelegant way to get the photos onto my computer. Here, sadly enough, are some of the more notable ones:

Never been to Texas? Stare at this picture for six hours, take a nap, then stare at it for another few hours. There, I just saved you about a hundred dollars in gas money.

Hi,meet “Snake Eyes” and “Duke”. They’re GI Joe action figures. Next to the CompUSA was a Toys r’ Us and Eddie nearly broke his leash trying to get through the front door. Once inside, he wavered between getting a Gameboy Advance SP (!!!) or four GI Joe action figures to help pass the time during the long drives. As you can see from the pictures, he chose to get stupid action figures instead of a nice fun video game system. During the next few hours of the drive, Eddie proceeded to make his GI Joe action figures fight each other. This “fighting” consisted mostly of making the the good GI Joes flail and knock down the evil Cobra action figures. Usually this looked like two epileptics at a breakdancing contest. Occasionally it looked like extremely acrobatic sex with laser noises. Not pictured here are “Cobra Commander” and “Zartan”. Evil action figures get their own part of the car to hang from.

This is Eddie sleeping. I took this picture over my shoulder while I was driving. I don’t think it’s a shitty photograph. I think it’s “artistic”.

I’m bitching, because it’s fun to bitch, and, really, I’m pretty good at it. Truth be told, I’m having a great time. I’ve always wanted to do this.

Like I said, Houston is hoppin. Tomorrow: New Orleans…
