Just wrote a new feature for the PG site. Check it out.
As far as me personally, I have this to say:
A long time ago in China, an old farmer’s horse ran away. His neighbors all said, “Hey that’s too bad.” The old farmer just said, “Who knows?”
The next day the farmer’s horse returns with two wild fillies. His neighbors tell him, “Hey that’s great!” The old farmer says, “Maybe. Maybe not.”
The day after that, the farmer’s oldest son, while trying to tame one of the wild horses, gets thrown and breaks his leg. The neighbors come by to give him their condolences. The farmer wonders out loud if the condolences are even warranted.
Later, the Emperor’s emissary comes by the village and conscripts one able-bodied man from each household for the war. The old farmer’s son is passed up because of his leg.
I guess the point of this story is: 3 years ago, my goddam horse ran away. In the past two weeks, he’s come back with a herd, and I’m trying to figure out how the hell to handle it.
I read a book last year called, “The Inner Game Of Tennis” by W. Timothy Gallwey and one of the main precepts that really stuck with me was something to the effect of: The game of tennis is won between matches, not during the rallies. One consistent behavior of champions is that they act and think the same after a loss as they do after a win.
Easy to know, hard to do.
Anyway, read the PG feature. It’s called I Would Make a Terrible Woman.
